Steven Suttles Obituary

Wharton:  Steven Ray Suttles, 85, of Wharton, NJ, passed away peacefully in Morristown, NJ, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, creativity, and boundless generosity. Known to all as Ray, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend whose warmth and wit touched countless lives.

Born to Myrtle Washburn and Floyd Suttles, Ray was predeceased by his parents and two infant brothers. He grew up with a deep appreciation for learning and service, values that would shape his life’s path. He earned his undergraduate degree at Gardner-Webb College, where he met his soulmate, Loretta Brooks. He later completed his master’s degree at Syracuse University, forging friendships there that would last a lifetime.

Ray’s professional life was marked by dedication and purpose. He began as a teacher and later served in federal service with the U.S. Army. In his second career, he devoted himself to the AIDS community, offering care, advocacy, and companionship during a time of great need.

Ray was a man of many passions. He found joy in acting, crocheting scarves for the homeless and prayer shawls for those facing illness or grief, and collecting antiques that told stories of the past. His service earned him numerous accolades, including the Catholic Charities Volunteer Award, the Jefferson Award for Community Service, and the Kay Scheiner Outstanding Buddy Award.

He was a collector—not just of antiques, but of people. Ray made lifelong friends everywhere he went, drawn to his kindness, humor, and genuine interest in others. His adventurous spirit took him across Europe, and he once danced on stage at the Moulin Rouge, a moment that perfectly captured his zest for life.

Ray’s family was the heart of his world. He is survived by his cherished wife Loretta; his children Damien Suttles and his former wife Katherine, Shannon Suttles, Heather Hingtgen and her husband Terry; and his grandchildren Kevin Suttles, Damien Massee, Justin Hingtgen, and Jayce Hingtgen. His desire to open his heart and home extended beyond borders—he fulfilled a dream of hosting a foreign exchange student and was blessed with Simone Jannsen of the Netherlands, whose playful spirit matched his own. Simone became a third daughter in every way that mattered. Her husband Bart and their children, Ralph and Iris, brought Ray great joy and became part of his cherished extended family.

A private service will be held this week. A public celebration of Ray’s life will take place Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 12 Noon to 2:00 PM at the Bermingham Funeral Home in Wharton, NJ. All who knew and loved Ray will be welcome to gather, share stories, and honor the extraordinary life of a man who gave so much to so many.
